Description:
OD-1 was technically designed to disperse oil build up or any oil spill
into tiny molecular particles so that it could be easily biodegraded.
" No one anticipated any unusual problems as the Exxon Valdez left the Alyeska Pipeline Terminal
at 9:12 p.m., Alaska, on March 23,1989. The 987ft ship, second newest in Exxon Shipping 20-tanker fleet, was loaded
with 1,264,155 barrels of North Slope crude oil, Yet less than three hours later, the Exxon Valdez grounded at Bligh
Reef, rupturing eight of its 11 cargo tanks
One of the major lessons of the Exxon Valdez oil spill was that the spill prevention and response capability in Prince William Sound was fundamentally inadequate. Dispersants were applied however, there was not enough dispersant on hand to make a dent in the spreading oil slick. Dispersants are now stockpiled for use and systems are in place to apply them from helicopters, airplanes, and boats.
